Ideation & Preparation

Ideation &
Preparation

With only 4–5 hours allocated for ideation, I had to distill a broad theme "Travel" into a clear, emotionally resonant concept. I began by narrowing the theme into sub-categories like transportation, location, and symbolic items, etc. This is followed by the creation of mood boards, concept rationale, and sketches.

Balancing creativity with efficiency, I simultaneously developed the vinyl cut files and final visuals using Adobe Illustrator, ensuring consistency across all outputs.

I learned that successful visual merchandising isn’t just about standing out, it’s about creating shared, memorable experiences that are in clear and impactful.

Implementation

This phase was both technically and physically intensive. It requires me to construct the entire display from scratch, using tools, materials, and given props. Each element from assembling and applying vinyl to styling mannequins, had to reflect the original design with accuracy and intention.

The process demanded hands-on problem solving and adaptability especially when unexpected props were introduced on the second day.

Time management and precision were key, as each detail—whether painted, masked, or positioned—needed to be executed to professional standards.

This stage deepened my appreciation for spatial composition, scale, and tactile storytelling within retail environments.

Cleanup & Presentation

Cleanup &
Presentation

Maintaining a tidy, organized workspace throughout the competition was essential not only for safety and efficiency, but also for presenting a polished, professional impression.

I developed a system for grouping materials and routinely clearing unused elements to keep the environment visually and mentally clear.

Presenting the final setup…

I captured the spirit of Jewel Changi Airport with the essence of travel and adventure. I’m proud of the emotional narrative and immersive quality I was able to communicate, and this experience taught me how to combine design thinking with real-world execution under pressure.
